Skandal Facebook-Cambridge Analytica menyadarkan kita semua bahwa kini kita telah memasuki era Surveillance Economy yang ditandai dengan fenomena “the end of privacy”.

Dengan memanfaatkan layanan, apps atau website yang diberikan oleh Google, Facebook, Twitter, atau Youtube data-data pribadi kita diambil, diolah, dan kemudian dijual kepada brand dan pengiklan sehingga menghasilkan bisnis bernilai triliunan dolar.

Surveillance economy adalah sebuah bentuk ekonomi baru dimana value diciptakan melalui big data dari seluruh perilaku kita (pencarian kata di Google, percakapan kita di Facebook, transaksi kita di situs ecommerce, lokasi kita di Waze, foto keseharian kita layar CCTV, atau kebiasaan kita yang direkam oleh weareable device Apple-Nike) yang diekstraksi diolah, dan kemudian dimonetisasi menjadi bisnis menggiurkan.

Surveillance Economy

The Big Four (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple) menggurita begitu cepat (kapitalisasi pasar keempatnya $2700 miliar, tiga kali GDP Indonesia) karena mereka smart bermain di era Surveillance Economy.

Tipikal perusahaan yang sukses di Surveillance Economy adalah perusahaan semacam Facebook dan Cambridge Analytica yang membentuk, memodifikasi, dan mengarahkan perilaku kita untuk tujuan monetisasi bisnis atau kepentingan politik tertentu.

Seperti kata Shoshana Zuboff, profesor Harvard pengritik Surveillance Economy, “They are intervening to modify our behaviour, to shape our behaviour, in order to determine what we will do next.” Data 87 juta warganet dikumpulkan, dibaca perilakunya, dan kemudian diarahkan sedemikian rupa untuk memilih Donald Trump sebagai presiden.

Skandal Facebook-Cambridge Analytica adalah “pucuk gunung es”, artinya akan diikuti kasus-kasus berikutnya secara massal. Kenapa? Karena semua big data giants seperti Google, Apple, Amazon, Uber, hingga AirBnB melakukannya, karena model bisnis mereka beroperasi berdasarkan “surveillance platform”.

Pertanyaannya, bagaimana kita menyikapi Surveillance Economy? Baik sebagai konsumen/masyarakat maupun sebagai pebisnis?
